The Society for Biomaterials and Artificial Organs (India), commonly known as SBAOI, is a premier non-profit professional organization dedicated to the advancement of biomaterials science, medical devices, and artificial organs in India.
Founded on January 3, 1986, by Dr. Chandra P. Sharma and his colleagues at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) in Thiruvananthapuram, the society was established to bridge the gap between academia, industry, and clinicians during a time when India’s healthcare market began showing significant growth potential.
Core Mission and Objectives
The primary goal of SBAOI is to cultivate a nationwide ecosystem for both fundamental and technology-oriented research. Its mandates include:
-
Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Bringing together researchers from diverse fields such as Chemistry, Materials Science, Biotechnology, and Engineering with clinicians and industry professionals.
-
Translational Research: Accelerating the movement of lab discoveries to clinical applications and indigenous manufacturing of medical implants (e.g., heart valves, hydrocephalus shunts).
-
Professional Networking: Serving as a platform for stakeholders to exchange concepts through workshops, laboratory demonstrations, and national conferences.
Key Activities and Global Standing
SBAOI is one of the largest biomaterials societies globally, boasting over 1,000 members. It holds significant international weight through its affiliations:
-
International Union (IUS-BSE): Since 2003, SBAOI has been a member of the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering.
-
Annual Conferences: The society organizes major national and international conferences (such as the upcoming BioMANTHAN at IIT Ropar in late 2025) to showcase cutting-edge research.
-
Official Publication: It publishes the international journal Trends in Biomaterials and Artificial Organs (TIBAO), which is indexed in major databases like Scopus and recognized by the UGC.
