Abstract

The world has suddenly fallen prey to an old and invisible predator, the coronavirus. As per WHO, the first incident of the current pandemic, COVID-19 (coronavirus disease of 2019), was reported on 31st Dec., 2019 by Wuhan Municipal Health Commission, China, with a group of cases having similar symptoms closely resembles with pneumonia in Wuhan, Hubei Province. Other than COVID 19 other respiratory infections such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) were caused by viruses in in past few decades.  In various studied metal nanoparticles showed immense potential for the treatment of viral infections due to its unique properties. Metal nanoparticles being effective antiviral agents, act either outside the host cell by blocking the entry of viral particles or inside by inhibiting viral replication. Gold nanoparticles and silver nanoparticles are studied extensively in viral infection, which points toward a bright future in development of this field. Also, other metal nanoparticles are being studied for efficacious results. This review includes importance of metal nanoparticles in treatment of respiratory viruses their mode of action and details of some metal nanoparticles which are studied for the treatment of respiratory infections.
